I don't think we ignore this willfully - we're made to believe that pain is not normal and that we should be embarrassed to be in pain. Sometimes we need to be able to ignore it to get to a place of safety, a space where we're able to examine ourselves and take appropriate steps to repair any damage. At those times painkillers can be enormously helpful. But all too often, as you say, we use them to hide from and ignore any kind of pain, and then we become disconnected from our physical and emotional pains.
